The undertail coverts and the wing linings are white. ![]() The belly is red-orange, separated from the blue breast by a white bar. Adults have black heads and iridescent blue-to-green back, upper breast, wings, and tail. These small short-tailed starlings have a long narrow bill, robust bodies, strong feet and a distinctive plumage pattern. ![]() This species is 18 to 19 cm (7.1 to 7.5 in) long. The Superb Starling lives in savanna, in thornbush and acacia arid areas, open woodland, lakeshore woodlands, gardens and cultivated fields, at an elevation of 0–2,650 metres (0–8,694 ft) above sea level. This species has a very large range and can commonly be found in East Africa, including Ethiopia, Somalia, Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, and Tanzania. Please note the traces of mud on the beak of the bird in my photo. Typically, they were on the ground, moving quickly to peck at and investigate every possible hiding place which could conceal a seed or an insect. By that I mean, I seldom saw them at rest for very long. ![]() In addition to being wonderfully colored, they're a very hard working bird. <=Īs mentioned in the Wikipedia information I've included below, Superb Starlings have a very large range and we saw them at almost every location during our trip. => Please click on the image to see the largest size.
